WHAT IS A CERTIFICATE?

A diamond certificate, also referred to as a diamond grading report, dossier or document, is issued following an independent, unbiased and professional examination by a team of gemmologists to validate a diamond’s attributes. The Diamond certificate includes the analysis of the Diamond’s carat, colour, clarity and other characteristics together with the diamond’s exact dimensions. The Cut grade is also included for Round Brilliant cuts.

We at Lover’s Rock Diamonds are pleased to say that every one of our diamonds has been analysed and graded by either the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD), or the International Gemological Institute (IGI).

GRADING LABORATORIES EXPLAINED

Before making your diamond purchase it is worth considering that there exists no single set of criteria diamond laboratories use to grade diamonds. Every laboratory uses its own, different set of standards.

GIA, HRD, IGI are among the most internationally recognised, respected and trusted gemmological grading laboratories in the diamond industry, and are known for their consistency and unbiased diamond grading systems. GIA & HRD are amongst those that really set the standard. The GIA is regarded as the most reputable and recognised grading laboratory in the world, with the strictest standards. HRD is almost as recognised worldwide as GIA and they closely adhere to the same strict grading standards. Diamonds that are accompanied by these grading reports are some of the most highly valued in the industry.

The American Gem Society Laboratories (AGL) (is as renowned as GIA and HRD with the same strict standards) and the European Gemmological Laboratory (EGL) are two other independent diamond grading laboratories. Lover’s Rock Diamonds does not carry diamonds certified by these laboratories.

IMPORTANT: Always buy a diamond that comes complete with a certificate. If your diamond is not graded by a recognised grading lab, there is a possibility that the grading listed could be misleading and that you are purchasing a diamond of lesser quality than specified. Unfortunately, in some cases, retail shops and online stores will self-certify in order to increase their margin on the products they sell.
